In the 60s, Nord Aviation (later to become Aerospatiale and now EADS)
developed an ablative thermal insulation material based on oakwood powder
and phenolic resin.

This material is known as "Norcoat Liège" ("Liège" means oak in French). You
should try it in Google.

It is used for low or middle aerodynamic flux (less than 1 MW/m2).

Among its space applications were the upper thermal insulation of ESA's
Advanced Reentry Demonstrator (ARD) in 1998, and the upper thermal cap of
the less successful Beagle 2.
