COSMOS 1 - SOLAR SAIL UPDATE
August 2004

PROJECT DIRECTOR UPDATE
COSMOS 1: THE WORLD'S FIRST SOLAR SAIL SPACECRAFT
ACHIEVES CRITICAL MILESTONE

With the delivery of all electronic systems, Cosmos 1
-- the world's first solar sail craft -- achieved a critical
milestone in its countdown towards its launch later this year or
early in 2005.

The world's first solar sail craft is nearing completion.
All electronic systems are now flight qualified and were
delivered to the spacecraft for final assembly and
testing. We achieved this milestone on August 5, 2004,
after weeks of testing at the Space Research Institute
(IKI) in Moscow. We then shipped the parts to NPO
Lavochkin (approximately 50 kilometers on the other
side of Moscow), where they are now being integrated
on the spacecraft.

This long-anticipated milestone permits us to begin
the final assembly of the spacecraft.
