You are right except it is said that Mishin ordered the destruction of
the descent module because of some of the problems and the expectation
that it would land outside the USSR. So as to what was potentially left
in earth orbit remains a mystery to me if anything I remember this
mystery we all discussed in the 1970's and there was some wonder if it
had landed in China which I think is more of the myths that can be
debunked at this point. What really strikes me is the difference between
what the US thought was going on verses what was in fact going. It
screams to the inadequacy of the American Think as I have tried to make
some what clear with the following two papers that I urge all to read.
The following chapters from:

Those of you that read the recent two of three installments of the Quest
articles The Moon Race "End Game" by C. P. Vick and Peter Pesavento will
remember the references to some of those unpublished documents now
released. This is the end product of an extremely difficult five year
study effort conducted by myself. It effectively declassifies for the U.
S. intelligence community historic information that was needed to fill
some of the Lunar Race data gaps of the U. S. side's view of the Soviet
efforts that the community has refused to release.
The credibility of official US intelligence community classification
policy is called into serious question by multiple agency efforts to
withhold
Information that can be readily ascertained from open sources that can
be duplicated in considerable detail as is demonstrated by this study.
I never imagined that I would be able to develop so much detail as the
first documents table-III displays. Many thanks go to Lt. Col. Vladimir
Antipov, Ted Molczan, Phillip S. Clark, and editorial assistance James
T. Westwood, Peter Pesavento, John E. Pike and Steven Aftergood and
other private information sources. Mr. Glenn Johnson,

This is a detailed review of the KH-8/Gambit-II and KH-9/Hexagon imagery
of the primary "J" vehicle activities that has been possible to
Define from open sources of the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. It
defines both the process used and the information revealed.

It contains charted data from the official records of the Baikonur
cosmodrome on the "J: vehicle actual activities regardless of what the
U. S. intelligence community thought was going on along with the CORONA,
GAMBIT and HEXAGON coverage information defining what was images and or
monitored by US intelligence. This is the end product of a five year
study conducted by myself. Much credit is owed to Retired Lt. Col.
Vladimir Antipov, Dr. Dimtry Pieson, Phillip S. Clark and the late Dr.
Maxim Tarasenko.

Subject: [FPSPACE] Zond 4
Zond 4, an unmanned Soviet spacecraft was launched 180 deg away from
the position of moon. It did NOT go out as far as lunar orbit, reaching
193,000 miles (intentional) and then returning to Earth with the
intent of a reentry and landing in the USSR. Guidance failed and it
ended up in an elliptical orbit around the Earth and remained there for
years. Would have to search my records to see if it ever reentered.
I recall offhand (but not positive as I write this) that there were
prerecorded voice communication with Zond 4. None of these remarks are
guesswork. I was in the aerospace industry at the time and we had a
long running contract with the appropriate agencies to examine USSR
space activity and was aboard right after the Zond 4 launch. Didn't
stay long, didn't like the nut that was running the program.
