Now that's really a long-distance call!
( 2003-10-16 10:48) (China Daily)=20
In a live telephone link from the Shenzhou-V, astronaut Yang Liwei last =
night told his family he felt "very good" in space.=20
"I promise to fulfill this mission smoothly. Wait for my good news," =
Yang said confidently.=20
The talk was held at 7:58 pm between the 38-year-old Yang and his family =
members, who watched him carefully at the tracking and control hall at =
Beijing Aerospace Control Centre. =20
"So proud of you, hubby," said Zhang Yumei, Yang's wife. "Our parents, =
your son and I are looking at you now. What does the outside of the =
module look like?"=20
"Splendid!" replied Yang. "The scenery outside is very beautiful, and I =
can see our beautiful home planet. The inner environment of the craft is =
very good."=20
"Dear Daddy, how are you? Have you written diaries? What did you eat?" =
asked the astronaut's 8-year-old son Yang Ningkang. =20
"Thank you, my dear son," Yang said. "The condition of my body is pretty =
good. I have written down everything about the work here and what I saw. =
I ate the so-called space food in the module," he added humorously.=20
"I wish you smooth sailing and I'll see you tomorrow," said the grade =
two student.=20
Yang rocketed into space at 9:00 am yesterday. He took with him Chinese =
dishes like eight-treasure rice pudding, stir-fried diced chickens with =
chili and peanuts, fish-flavoured shredded pork and a tonic drink =
containing traditional Chinese medicine.=20
On the big screen at the command and control centre, Yang looked very =
calm piloting the capsule from his specially-designed chair.=20
Yang was born in June 1965 in Suizhong County of Northeast China's =
Liaoning Province and joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) =
at 18.=20
He graduated from the No 8 Aviation College of the PLA Air Force in 1987 =
with a bachelor's degree and went on to log 1,350 hours of flight =
experience as a fighter pilot. =20
Yang's colleagues describe him as a man with a good sense of team spirit =
who is dedicated to his career, while friends in his hometown, Suizhong =
County of Northeast China's Liaoning Province, remember that Yang =
dreamed of flying when still a child. His wife, Zhang Yumei, is also in =
the space programme.=20
According to Su Shuangning, director-general of the astronaut system =
under the nation's manned space programme, China's first team of =
astronauts are all capable of working and living in space thanks to five =
years of rigid physical, psychological and technical training.=20
"To establish myself as a qualified astronaut, I studied harder than in =
my college years and have received training much tougher than for a =
fighter pilot," said Yang.=20
In January 1998 Yang became a member of China's first team of =
astronauts.
Now, to the other story...no fast movement should be expected
China to launch Shenzhou 6 in one or two years
( 2003-10-16 11:37) (chinadaily.com.cn)=20
China will launch Shenzhou-6 spacecraft in one or two years, said Xie =
Mingbao, director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, =
Thursday.=20
At a press conference Thursday morning after Yang Liwei, China's first =
space man, landed safely in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Xie =
noted that China had launched four Shenzhou spacecrafts in the past four =
years, or once every year on average.=20
"So I think that on the basis of well summing up the experience of the =
successful launch of the Shenzhou-5 manned spacecraft, the country will =
send its next Shenzhou craft in one or two years," he added.=20
He continued that China has no plan to develop space shuttle.=20
Turning to the decision by China Central Television not to broadcast =
live the launch of Shenzhou V, Xie said that for China's space program =
administrators safety of the astronaut and the spacecraft was more =
important.
He said: "we don't think that the TV live broadcast has any direct =
bearing on the success of our spaceflight."=20
"What we really care is to do a good job in launch organization, achieve =
more technological breakthroughs and do a better job in quality control =
of the spacecraft, which is key to ensuring a complete success of the =
mission," said Xie.
Meanwhile, he added, China's space workers have always "had full =
confidence in success".=20
The Chinese government has in all allocated 18 billion yuan (US$2.2 =
billion) to its manned space program by the time of successful return of =
the Shenzhou-5 space vehicle Thursday morning, according to Xie.=20
The fund was mainly used for scientific research, manufacturing of =
equipment and instruments, the construction of essential facilities for =
research and tests, and consequently a system complete with all =
necessary departments of research, production and test related to manned =
spaceflight was established.
China is willing to cooperate with other countries in space exploration =
on the basis of equality, said Xie.
He noted that China is willing to learn from the United States and =
Russia in developing space technology, and cooperate with any other =
country that treats China as its equal partner for mutual benefit, he =
said.=20
China has been developing its high-tech space technology, which have =
benefited the country's various basic industries, according to Xie.
