Nazis did it for aviation-related "research", essentially to test how long
pilots of high-altitude planes would survive at the low pressure and lack of
oxygen.

I am surprised. I've heard about the ice-water tests and other ghastly 
tortures, but what on Earth would the Nazis doctors be doing with vacuum 
exposure? Are you sure this isn''t a space-urban-legend or a garbled memory?
