The story that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Klebanov has decided that Mir
should be de-orbited in February turns out not to be entirely true. The
real story is that he is simply saying that, absent new funding from
MirCorp, Mir will have to be de-orbited. On the other hand, if funding is
available, Mir could continue to fly.
This is not to say that new money has been found yet, but I understand that
there is new interest among people with significant resources.
Moreover, the possibility of finally deploying the tether at Mir could have
important ramifications for ISS.
