     This is surprising to a foreigner. The USN has 45 years
experience in
selecting crews for nuclear-powered subs, that must also
work & live
shoulder-to-shoulder, & learn to use a  sub toilet   :)  for
up to one or two
or even three months without coming up to the surface.

     The same tests could easily apply to astro/cosmonaut
selection. 
Of course, intense motivation - selected out of thousands of
applicants -
waiting at least two years of training for the Big Day -
knowing that IF there
is a 2nd trip, you could wait another three or five years
for that, so
everything depends on good behaviour, stiff upper lip, &
biting back your tongue,
does help in most cases ...
