A factory worker who has learnt in a quite adult age to operate a spacecraft
(even though a very simple one)? A woman with dozens of parachute jumps in
the 50ths? A person who would be confined alone within 72 hours to a tiny
eggshell in dangerous environment without acquiring permanent brain damage nor
psychological breakdown? Then coming back to Earth and having a healthy child?
Who is a distinguished person then?
By the way, without Tereshokva (deservedly or not), there would be much fewer
female astronauts, who (deservedly) serve a prove of achievability of very
high goals for many women.
As of the propaganda side of Tereshkova's flight and its afterwards: it is very
doubtful that Lady Lothian, the president of International Women of the
Year Association, and her association are sympathetic to the ideas of the
total equality. Therefore, the award was granted to Tereshkova even after
discounting her stunt for ideological agenda.
