Wade,
Another fine piece of work.
Have you read, "Technology Transfer Out of Germany After 1945" by
Matthins Judt, and Burghard Ciesla?
In general, what was the "conventional wisdom?" I've heard two.
Wisdom #1. Our (Western) German Scientists were better than their
German Scientists.
or, We (the West) got the best of the deal in
bringing German rocket personnel to the West. We got all of the good stuff
shipped by to White Sands.
Wisdom #2. The Soviet Union had no use of Western Science or it's
assistance. The German technicians were of little use and were sent back to
East Germany early. It was "impossible" to dismantle , ship, and reassemble
all of those plants, facilities, and equipment back in Russia. Most of them
just sat by the railroad stations and rusted away (American Diplomat). The
Americans "blew up" the rocket facilities after they "stole" what equipment
they wanted. Americans took the best parts for themselves, "illegally" I
might add since East Germany was considered "Soviet" Territory after the
three allied meetings between Churchill, Stalin, and what's his name. And I
believe we recently were treated by an e-mail from Jim Oberg via a Russian
writer who again reminded us of all of the spectacular developments the
Soviets developed totally alone and by themselves.
So which conventional wisdom did you mean?
