> If you read the Post article, you will see mention of Joshua Handler, a US
> researcher who used to work for Greenpeace. Handler is a Princeton
> Ph.D. student who has written about Russian military environmental
> problems.
> Handler wrote about this incident early this year in the Bulletin of the
> Atomic Scientists. I will see if I can find his article on-line. He
I cannot find the article about Handler's detainment. I did find an
article by him about the Nikitin case (the Russian submarine captain). It
is at:
http://www.thebulletin.org/issues/2000/ma00/ma00handler.html
There is a sidebar article there about increased intimidation of
researchers. I will keep searching for the article on Handler. I think
his case is worth noting because he is clearly a grad student with ties to
very non-government organizations (Greenpeace) and a long publishing
history. Yet the Russians still went after him. This indicates to me
that an American graduate student doing research in Russia could also be
targeted and charged.
