Hi-res photos were taken of the N-1 launch facility, in 1969, before and
after it blew up. These photos were shown to NASA because they related to
the Moon Race. They must have been acquired from close-look spysats,
because DSP couldn't do that, because the sensor element in DSP is a single
string of IR detectors, not a camera. DSPs are used to rapidly scan for
thermal blooms over the entire disk of the earth, not stare at one spot for
pictures. So, yeah, he is mixing up early warning birds with
photoreconaissance.
Also curious that this author used the term "Tyuratam" which, for ten years
at least, everyone has known was Soviet disinformation. Why not just say
Baikonur? This and other errors suggests to me that his background research
was limited and his sources are few and/or dated.
