29/Nov/00 BRAZIL: PORTUGAL AND SPAIN PRIME DESTINATIONS FOR BRAZILIAN SEX
Rio de Janeiro, Nov 29, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) - Portugal and Spain are the
principal destinations for Brazilian women that are forced into
prostitution abroad, Brazilian Federal Police said Wednesday.
"Most of the investigations that we have opened into the international
trafficking of women have arisen from complaints filed by young Brazilian
women who escaped from captivity in Portugal and Spain," Federal Police
spokesman Carlos de Castro told EFE.
A report released in Brasilia - during a conference hosted by the U.N.
Office for Drug Control and Organized Crime Prevention - said that of the
nearly one million women that are forced into prostitution worldwide, an
estimated 75,000 are from Brazil.
The number was part of a series of estimates compiled by the International
Helsinki Federation for Human Rights. The federation also indicated that
white slavery generates some seven billion dollars annually.
According to the federation, the trafficking of prostitutes is the third
most-profitable criminal enterprise in the world, after drug trafficking
and arms smuggling.
Brazil is one of the six nations that provides a majority of the women for
the so-called prostitution circuits.
According to Interpol, the principal destinations for the women are
Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Canada, Suriname, Holland, Spain, France and
