10-16-00 ROMANIA: PROGRAMME FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN AGAINST
TRAFFICKING OF HUMAN BEINGS.
Bucharest, Oct 16 /Rompres/ - Romanian Interior Minister Constantin Dudu
Ionescu and U.S. Ambassador in Bucharest James Rosapepe launched on Monday
at the Interior Ministry a programme regarding the protection of women and
children against the trafficking of human beings.
The programme includes a campaign of warning the women and the Romanian
society in general about the trafficking of women. The 12-month programme
brings together governmental institutions and NGOs and the financial
contribution of the U.S. Government is of USD 300,000. Ambassador Rosapepe
said that the organized crime took advantage of the helpless women and it
had to be fought against.
The Romanian Interior Minister emphasized Romania's wish 'to be UE's last
frontier" as well as the existence of institutions discouraging organized
crime. The existence was saluted of the SECI Centre that allows the member
states to fight for the annihilation of the traffickers and for the
destruction of their networks.
