9-24-00 REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: SEX TRAFFICKERS USE IRISH FIRMS TO TRAP

RUTHLESS sex traffickers are exploiting Ireland's shortage of workers in
the booming economy.
They are using Dublin as a stepping stone to provide prostitutes across the
Irish Sea in England.
Dozens of young eastern European women are being lured west with promises
But we have learned that they end up working in the sex industry,
Many of them are alleged to come west on work visas issued in Ireland.
An incredible 1,150 Latvians have been issued with permits in the last 12
months - more than 10 per cent of the entire total number issued.
And now questions are being asked about where they end up, as the
government is unable to monitor them after they arrive in Ireland.
The Irish Sunday Mirror has learned that immigration officials have raised
questions about the large numbers coming in from various countries,
One source said: "At least 10 per cent of all people issued with work
permits come from one country, Latvia. Questions have to be asked."
It is thought a sophisticated forgery operation swings into operation once
an Irish employer signs up just one employee.
One major figure involved in Ireland's vice trade confirmed that a number
of Latvian and Lithuanian girls had passed through Dublin.
He said: "It makes sense to use a bona fide employer as a front to bring
Latvian girls here on work permits for the service industry."

and Britain to fill the demand for vice girls in London, Birmingham and
