TIRANA (May 11) XINHUA - The trafficking in women and girls, a violation of
women's rights, has become a more serious social problem in Albania, the
Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) reported Thursday.
In Lezhe area, Western Albania, which has a good sea geographical
position, this trafficking has been on a marked rise, according to a survey
conducted by the Advising Center for Women and Girls in cooperation with
Intersos and ECHO organizations, the ATA said.
The survey shows that about 72 percent of those interviewed confirmed
that many girls from their districts had been forcibly sent to neighboring
countries, Italy and Greece.
Local sociologists believed that the trafficking in women and girls is
deeply rooted because women and girls are considered to as creatures
without rights and totally dependent on a dominant male. Such mentality has
become worse as a result of serious social and economic problems over
recent years, according to the ATA.
