Czech Republic Among Countries Used by Prostitute Smugglers
NEW YORK, Apr 3, 2000 -- (CTK - Czech News Agency) The Czech Republic,
together with Russia, Thailand, China, Mexico and Vietnam, is a country
from which prostitutes and other abused persons are most frequently
smuggled to the USA, the U.S. daily The New York Times writes today,
citing a report by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The report, drawn up last November, is based on information provided by
government officials, lawyers, victims and specialists in the USA and
abroad, and on files of investigation and other documents, the newspaper
says.
The report describes cases of foreign women who accepted offers such as
to work in U.S. restaurants, authorities and as baby-sitters. On their
arrival, however, they found out that the promised job did not exist.
They were subsequently kidnapped and forced to prostitution or slave
labor.
The report is not secret but the authorities have not made it public. Its
text was reportedly provided to The New York Times by an unnamed
government official who wanted the broad public to become acquainted with
it. ((c) 2000 CTK - Czech News Agency)
