A special tribunal court of women and children repression affairs here
convicted one person and sentenced him to life term with rigorous
imprisonment (RI) and fined Taka 10,000, in default, to suffer another five
years RI in a human trafficking case recently. Court sources said the
convicted person Montaz Ali (55) of Nurpur-Malanchi village in Bagatipara
thana of the district trafficked one Maksuda Begum (25) alias Nisbita of
the same village in early 1991 to Pakistan through India with the help of
international women and children trafficking gang.
He also realized Taka 40,000 from Maksuda with the assurance of
providing her a lucrative job. The convicted Montaz sold her to one Yunus,
an Indian agent of the gang, at 35,000 rupees. The agent sold Maksuda to a
Pakistani agent at 45,000 rupees. Window mother of the victim Halima Bewa,
being informed of her daughter's condition in Karachi, appealed to the
government of Pakistan for sending back her to Bangladesh through
newspapers in 1996, but she failed of get back her daughter.
Dhaka based Women Lawyers Association took necessary steps to get back
the victim on June 20, 1997. Accordingly the victim returned to Bangladesh
on June 29, 1997. Maksuda Begum filed the case with the court on July 4,
1997. Additional District and Sessions Judge, Majibur Rahman after
examining evidences and witnesses awarded the punishment to the convict
Montaz in his absentia. Montaz remained absconding since 1997.
