08May00 DENMARK: DANISH TRAVEL AGENCIES PAEDOPHILE CHARGE.
COPENHAGEN, May 8 (Reuters) - A children's charity accused Copenhagen
travel agencies on Monday of arranging sex tours for paedophiles to the
Baltic states and asked Danish police to investigate.
Vernon Jones, project manager of Save the Children Denmark, said he had
evidence of at least one agency that organised trips for Danish men.
"We filed a request to the police after receiving reports from our Riga
office of cases of travel bureaux in Denmark specialising in organising
tours to the Baltics centred on exploiting minors sexually," Jones told
Reuters.Police said they would investigate the allegations.
Jones said paedophile tourism was a secret world and it was difficult to
get information about men who travelled to the Baltic states for child sex.
"But we have concrete information about one Copenhagen travel agency, which
organises such sex trips," he said, declining to name it. Travel agencies
often had one member of staff with the contacts needed to set up paedophile
sex tours, he said.
The Baltic states were the most popular destination with Riga, the Latvian
capital, topping the list, followed by Poland, Russia and other eastern
European countries, Jones said.
Other Scandinavian, German and British men were also frequent child sex
tourists to eastern Europe.
"We are dealing with the mafia world in former communist bloc eastern
European countries. Prostitution and paedophile sex have soared since the
fall of communism," Jones said.
The Danish Travel Agency Association said it knew of no organisers of
paedophile tourism among its members.
