KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) -- A Malaysian employer "branded" his Indonesian maid on
her hand with an incense stick after accusing her of theft, reports said
Tuesday.

Ema Kumari, from Medan in Sumatra, was quoted by several newspapers as
saying she was also kicked, slapped and punched several times.

She told a press conference she escaped from her employer's home in the
southern state of Johor Baru and sought refuge with the Indonesian
consulate this month.

Immigration Department director-general Aseh Che Mat was quoted as saying
he would mount a full investigation into the claims -- the latest in a
series of reported attacks this year on Indonesian maids.

Ema, 28, who displayed a coin-sized burn on her palm, also said she had not
been paid by her employer.

The cabinet has ordered a study into ways of protecting foreign maids
following a spate of recent attacks.

In the worst reported case, an Indonesian maid was admitted to a hospital
intensive care unit after her female employer allegedly hit her on the head
with a rock.

A housewife has been charged. Other employers have also been detained or
are being investigated.

Some 150,000 foreign maids, mainly Indonesians, work in Malaysia to escape
poverty back home.
