Strippers get the boot
By Tom Godfrey
Toronto Sun, March 17, 2000

Some 12-15 strippers have been deported from Canada in a police crackdown
on illegal dancers.

The strippers were turfed after being arrested by a police task force
targeting sex in strip clubs.

Morality squad officers said they want to send a strong message to agents
who recruit and send young women here to work as strippers.

"We are targeting the unscrupulous agents," Det. Bert O'Mara said. "I think
the message is getting out to agents abroad."

ILLEGAL DANCERS

O'Mara said officers of the multi-agency task force, called Project
Almonzo, have raided 18 adult clubs in the GTA since being formed last May.
He said 600 charges have been laid against 163 strippers and patrons.
Almost 50 of the dancers were charged with immigration violations and their
cases are pending.

Police said the illegal dancers are often overlooked by immigration agents
who are too busy probing other cases.

The women deported to date have been sent back to Romania, Hungary, South
America and the Orient.

The dancers are recruited in those countries and promised lucrative
modelling or acting jobs in Canada, police said. Once here they're forced
into the stripping industry.
