The organizers said in a statement that trafficking in human beings,
predominantly women and children, is a form of modern-day slavery and one
of the most egregious human rights violations of our time.
In the Asian region alone, it is estimated that as many as 250, 000
human beings are bought and sold each year, said the statement.
The goal of the meeting is to develop a comprehensive and implementable
regional action plan and project proposals to combat women and children
trafficking within and from Asia.
