Brit 'nannies' turn to stripping in T.O.

The Ottawa Sun, February 18, 2000

TORONTO -- Toronto police morality officers say foreign women are coming
to Canada on visas to work as nannies and other jobs but head directly to
strip clubs upon their arrival.

The trend surfaced after police raided the Deja Vu club Tuesday night and
arrested a British nanny and a U.S dancer for working illegally.

"This woman has never worked as a nanny," said Det. Bert O'Mara. "We're
seeing many women using various work permits to come here to work as
strippers."

O'Mara said the 22-year-old woman arrived in Toronto from Britain last June
and has been table dancing since.

"We believe the work permits are a ruse some people use to come here to
strip," he said, adding the two dancers were among 16 people arrested in
the raid.

Eight of those charged were strippers. O'Mara said two other men, including
the club's co-owner, were nabbed for immigration violations.

He said officers allegedly found acts of prostitution taking place in the
club's VIP room and found patrons in sexual encounters.
