Hooker-addict sent packing
By Tom Godfrey
The Toronto Sun, February 1, 2000
A 34-year-old hooker who's spent half her life on Toronto street corners is
being deported to the Azores.
Valentina Cordeiro Furtado was ordered deported by an immigration and
refugee board because of the more than 55 convictions she's recorded in 17
years.
Immigration officials said it's rare when a female criminal, who is a
landed immigrant, is turfed from Canada.
Police said Furtado, who arrived in Canada at age 11, was a fixture on
downtown streets. The prostitute was on a first-name basis with some
officers because of her many arrests.
"The appellant's criminal record includes 21 prostitution-related
convictions," said board member Egya Sangmuah.
He said Furtado also has 10 fail-to-appear convictions, five for failing to
attend court and three for breach of probation. He said Furtado attributed
her lengthy record to her addiction to drugs.
"She testified that, at one point, she smoked crack every 20 minutes,"
Sangmuah said.
The board said even though Furtado has been in Canada for 22 years, she has
limited employment history.
