KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) -- Malaysian employers who assault their foreign maids
could lose their passports, the Immigration Department chief has warned.

The comments by Aseh Che Mat, carried in Thursday's newspapers, follow the
widely publicised case of an Indonesian maid who said she was tortured by
her boss for more than a year.

Nurjanah Matyak, 40, said she was told to cane herself 50 times on her
thighs for "mistakes" in performing her duties and suffers from blurred
vision following various other assaults.

Aseh said employers who beat up foreign maids could also be permanently
barred from hiring another one.

He said his department would meet agencies handling domestic helpers and
non-governmental organisations to discuss safeguards against abuse. There
are more than 150,000 foreign maids in the country.

Police were quoted as saying that Nurjanah's bosses had been detained for a
day and released on bail after questioning. They said they were waiting for
a medical report before finalising their investigation.
