TIRANA, January 24 (Xinhua) - Albania and Switzerland have agreed to join
hands to combat organized crime, particularly drug trafficking,
prostitution and illegal immigration, an Albanian Interior Ministry
spokesperson said Monday.
Albanian Interior Minister Spartak Poci and visiting Swiss Minister of
Justice and Police, Ruth Metzler-Arnold, discussed the matter during their
talks on Sunday, according to the spokesperson.
Metzler-Arnold proposed that expert groups from the two sides immediately
begin to work out details of the cooperation plan.
Switzerland is also ready to work with Albania in fighting money laundering
and in personnel training, she said when meeting with Albanian President
Rexhep Mejdani on Monday.
President Mejdani voiced his confidence about increased bilateral
cooperation, and stressed the need to create joint structures of
international nature to fight crimes such as illegal immigration that use
Albania as a transit country.
According to the Albanian interior minister, Albania has signed accords
with Greece and Italy to set up camps for illegal aliens who were turned
back by Albania but were not accepted for repatriation by their destination
Poci called for greater international efforts to tackle the problem.
