12-10-99 AUSTRALIA: SEX SLAVES SMUGGLED.
MORE than four times as many sex slaves are being trafficked into Australia
than there were two years ago, new figures showed yesterday.
An Immigration Department report said the number of sex workers found to be
in Australia illegally had jumped from 56 in 1996-97 to 243 in 1998-99.
Asian sex workers continued to make up most of the illegal immigrant sex
workers located in Australia. Women trafficked into Australia to work in
the sex industry were usually escorted by a people smuggling operative. -
