MANILA (AFP) -- Filipino maids, sailors and other foreign-based workers are
expected to send about eight billion dollars back home this year,
Philippine Foreign Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said Tuesday.

Figures received to date showed remittances of 4.7 billion dollars in the
seven months to July, he told reporters.

He said more than half a million Filipinos are working in the Middle East,
Europe, other parts of Asia, the United States, Australia, Africa and Latin
America.

Independent estimates put the total number of Filipinos working abroad even
higher, at up to six million Filipinos out of a national population of 74
million. Many of these include illegal immigrants who arrived at host
countries on tourist visas.
