TOKYO, Oct. 25 (Kyodo) -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department
inaugurated a squad Monday to fight child prostitution and child
pornography in line with a law banning the sexual exploitation and abuse of
minors to take effect next week.
The squad, based in the department's juvenile crimes section, comprises
126 officers, 24 of them female, tasked with providing counseling to
youngsters and tackling prostitution by girls under 18 years of age, police
It will also cooperate with other police sections, such as the center
dealing with high-tech crime, in a bid to reinforce guards against child
pornography on the Internet.
The law against child prostitution was enacted by the Japanese
parliament in May and becomes effective next Monday.
The number of minors involved in sex-related crimes is on the increase,
with Tokyo police taking into protection some 450 girls victimized in such
cases last year.
"We also want to try to support the girls and boys who have been
victimized," a Tokyo police official said.
