Woman Arrested for Selling Grandson
BLOOMFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- A woman jailed Thursday on charges of selling
her infant grandson for $20 says it was an informal adoption.
Police, meanwhile, continued searching for the child's 16-year-old
mother, two teen-age friends and the child's great-grandmother, Mary Ackers
of St. Louis, who allegedly made the arrangements.
The grandmother, Cathy L. Adams, 39, was arraigned Thursday on a felony
charge of trafficking in children. Police said she had handed 3-week-old
Michael over to a couple from Wardell, Mo., on Sunday.
Police said there was a questionable document transferring custody of
the child, and the couple told officers that the $20 they gave Adams on
Sunday was for gasoline, not the baby.
No charges had been filed against the couple Thursday.
The infant was in state custody.
