A recent article by IMADR (published in the April - June 1999 issue of their
newsletter, "Connect") states that according to Ms. Renu Rajbhandari,
President of Nepalese Women's Rehabilitation Center, about 5,000-6,000
Nepalese women and girls are being sold into prostitution in India each
year, of which 30% are under eighteen years of age.
In a 1995 report, Rape for Profit, Human Rights Watch documented the
largescale problem of trafficking in Nepali women and girls into brothels in
Bombay, and quoted the United Nepali Organization for the Relief of
Suffering Women (Sanyukta Nepali Satya Shodhak Pidit Mahila Sangh) as
estimating that there were 20,000 Nepali women and girls working as
prostitutes in Bombay alone.
