TOKYO, June 1 (AFP) -- Japanese police Tuesday arrested 60 suspected
illegal immigrants from China aboard a fishing boat, some of whom were
handcuffed, police and news reports said.

The 32 men and 28 women, aged between 17 and 46, were arrested aboard the
19-tonne Shoei Maru No. 2. off Japan's southern Kyushu Island, said a
police spokesman.

Five Japanese, including the ship's skipper, were also arrested, the agency
said. One of them tried to escape by leaping into the sea and had to be
rescued by another fishing boat, the spokesman said.

Some of the migrants -- who said they came from China's Fujian Province to
earn money in Japan -- were handcuffed, Kyodo News said. Police would not
confirm the handcuff reports.
