STRIP CLUB VIP ROOM RAIDED BY VICE COPS
By TOM GODFREY
The Toronto Sun, May 11, 1999
Eleven strippers were among 25 people charged with prostitution-related
offences following a police raid on a west-end strip club.
Det. Bert O'Mara said couples in various acts of prostitution were rounded
up during the raid at Features Adult Entertainment on The Queensway. O'Mara
said the alleged sex acts took place in a guarded upstairs VIP room.
"Patrons had to pay to get inside the VIP room," he said. "They couldn't
get in without a female."
Three dancers from Hungary were detained by immigration officials for
working in Canada illegally.
O'Mara said some of the strippers were recruited by agents in eastern
Europe with a promise of high-paying modelling jobs in Canada.
"The recruitment of these girls is of paramount concern to us. These women
are being exploited," he said.
Police said nine of those arrested were charged with keeping a common bawdy
house and 16 were charged with being found in a common bawdy house.
They were released on bail last Friday and will appear in court Thursday.
Immigration spokesman Anna Pape said the three strippers charged for
working illegally will have immigration hearings and could be deported.
Police said the same club was raided last June and 10 people were arrested.
