A MULTI-MEDIA LOOK AT SEX TRAFFICKING
New York--On Saturday, 10 April 1999, GABRIELA Network will host a
multi-media exposition of sex trafficking and the global trade in
women. The event, entitled Purple Rising, carries the Purple Rose
Campaign, and will feature a video marathon, story-telling, visual
concert, performances, and an open mike. It will be held at the
Resistance Theatre, 190 Underhill Ave., in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Admission will be at a sliding scale of $5, $10, or $15. Food and
refreshments will be served.
Launched this month, the Purple Rose Campaign is an international effort
that seeks to raise awareness on the sexual violence and human rights
abuses against women by extracting from the global population, men in
particular, a commitment to oppose the traffic of women, especially of
Filipino women, and a promise not to patronize the sex trade.
Symbolizing this oath is a Purple Rose pin, which comes with a pledge
card, to be signed and returned to GABRIELA Network, and a fact sheet.
Pins, pledge cards, and fact sheets are $1 per set, and will be
available at Purple Rising.
Liza Largoza-Maza, GABRIELA Philippines' Secretary General, says, "The
Purple Rose Campaign is a manifestation of resistance. It is a way of
saying enough to the trafficking of women, especially of Filipino
women. It is also a starting point to look deeper into the issue of
trafficking." Trafficking of women, Maza adds, is a reflection of the
relationship between rich and poor countries. As such, those who live
in countries like the US, where the sex trade is in demand and
patronized, have a special responsibility to raise each others'
consciousness about the traffic of women and to take an active role in
bringing an end to this atrocious global phenomenon.
Purple Rising will recount stories of victimization and survival, and
looks to provide a foundation from which individuals can act on the
issue of trafficking in women. An open mike will close the event.
Everyone's welcome to speak on women's issues and rights, to express
their support of the Purple Rose Campaign in the form of a poem, song,
announcement of event, etc.
