The U.S. border patrol has arrested nine Koreans, including five women, who
they suspect were being smuggled to New York City to work as sex slaves.
Swanton, Vt., assistant chief Ed Duda said the nine were arrested last
Tuesday night while driving through a farmer's field to an isolated border
crossing near Champlain, N.Y. He said the Koreans were being escorted by
two alleged smugglers, who had packed them into a van.
The Koreans were charged with a slew of immigration and smuggling offences
and ordered detained on Wednesday.
Officers believe the women -- aged from 20 to 30 -- were being smuggled to
New York City, Georgia or Chicago to work as prostitutes or escorts. Once
there, they're forced to work as sex slaves to repay the $30,000 it cost to
be smuggled to the U.S. from Korea, via Canada.
Officers said the group had arrived at Pearson airport days earlier and was
kept in safehouses until the trip to the U.S.
