Hillary Clinton Blasts Taliban, Trafficking In Women

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Hillary Rodham
blasted Afghanistan's Taliban rulers Thursday as probably
the world's worst
oppressors of women.
In a speech at the United Nations marking International
Women's Day next
Monday, she also called for a worldwide campaign to halt
trafficking in women and children.
``There probably is no more egregious and systematic trampling of
fundamental rights of women
today than what is happening in Afghanistan under the iron rule of the
Taliban,'' she said, referring
to the extremist Islamist movement that controls most of the country.
Clinton said women once comprised almost half of Afghanistan's doctors and
teachers but now
were barred from both professions while the doors of girls' schools ``are
``We have heard all of us the stories of women being flogged with metal
cables because a bit of
ankle would be showing. We have heard of women being taken to hospital after
hospital and finally
dying ... because there were no women doctors and no male doctor could be
permitted to treat the
women,'' she said.
It was no longer acceptable to claim that abuse and mistreatment of women
was cultural. ``It
should be called what it is, criminal,'' Clinton said.
Clinton, who arrived more than half an hour behind schedule, was applauded
loudly as she entered
a large U.N. conference chamber accompanied by Secretary-General Kofi Annan,
his wife Nane,
