UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE "A WORLD FREE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN" TO MARK
INTERNATIONAL WOMENS' DAY, 8 MARCH 1999

March 8, 1999 marks the last International Women's Day of this century. To
celebrate, a United Nations global videoconference is being coordinated by
UNIFEM from the UN General Assembly, linking 5 sites around the world: New
York, New Delhi, Mexico City, Nairobi and the European Parliament in
Strasbourg.

The event will take place from 9:30-11:00, New York time (14:30-16:00 GMT).
At each site, women and men whose personal experiences of confronting

on innovative responses to addressing this pandemic. Advocates who are
working on grassroots initiatives and legal change strategies will be
joined by Secretary General Kofi Annan; UN Special Rapporteur on Violence
Against Women, Rhadika Coomaraswamy; Rwanda War Crimes Tribunal member,
Judge Navanethem Pillay and many others. The event will be moderated by
Judy Woodruff of CNN, Daljit Dhaliwal of ITN, and Lynn Sherr of ABC's 20/20.

The conference will be broadcasted live on the Internet. It will be opened
in the UN General Assembly at 9:30 am New York time, that is, 14:30 GMT.
