Philippines Urges Workers to Go Abroad Legally

MANILA (Jan. 13) XINHUA - The Philippine government Wednesday appealed to
the overseas Filipino workers to abide by laws in going abroad as it works
with the Japanese government in investigating the deaths of two Filipino
workers in Japan.

Reynaldo Regalado, administrator of the Philippine Overseas Employment
Administration, asked the overseas workers to follow legal procedures so
the government can provide them with ample protection.

He said in an interview that the Department of Foreign Affairs and other
concerned government agencies are ready to assist in the investigation of
the deaths of the two Filipino women.

The two were found dead in their apartments in Osaka, Japan, last month.

He said initial investigation showed one of the two used a tourist visa in
leaving for Japan, while the other left in 1996 as a legitimate worker but
her contract had already expired.

While the government extends aid to illegal overseas workers, it would be
harder to do so if the workers do not have legal documents to help the
government keep track of them, he added.
