BEIJING, Nov 18 (Reuters) - China's capital city of Beijing on Tuesday
issued its first death sentence for prostitution, state media reported.
Ma Yulan, 41, was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court for
running a brothel disguised as a restaurant and sauna, Xinhua news agency
She was the first person to be handed the death penalty for the crime in
Beijing under new criminal statutes approved by the National People's
Congress, or parliament, last March.
Ma opened the brothel in June 1996, Xinhua said.
It was not known if she would appeal the sentence.
Eight other people implicated in the crime were given sentences ranging
from one to eight years, Xinhua said.
