Global Activities to Celebrate UDHR50, Women's Human Rights,
and to Fight Against Gender Violence
16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence -Nov. 25 to Dec.
10, culminates on 50th Anniversary of UDHR, 1998: Every year,
women activists and advocates worldwide take these 16 days to
raise awareness in the community and world at large to the
devastating effects of violence against women. This year, the
period culminates on the 50th anniversary of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and as part of the 1998
Global Campaign for Women's Human Rights, there will be a
series of activities that seek to ensure the visibility of women's
voices and demands in the commemoration of that event. Women
everywhere are invited to join this campaign by planning an event,
particularly one that would honour grassroots women activists and
organizations as human rights defenders.
Global Tribunal to Celebrate and Demand Women's Human
Rights, Wednesday December 9, '98, 3pm: Scheduled to be held
at the Church Centre at the United Nations, New York, this 2 to 3
hour event will build on the hearings and tribunals that many
women's human rights advocates have held in different parts of
the world during this UDHR 50th anniversary year. Women's
successes in bringing the attention of the world to the need to
protect women from human rights abuses and to promote their
human rights will be the focus. A "Women Light the Way" event will
follow. For more information, contact the Center for Women's
