GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR US SCHOLARS

IREX is pleased to announce the following grant opportunities for the
1999-2000 academic year. All of these grants are available only to
US-based scholars and students. If you wish to apply for any of these
grants, please request an application form from IREX's information
assistant at irex@irex.org, indicating which grant you want to apply
for.

Individual Advanced Research Opportunities

Grants of two to twelve months to predoctoral and postdoctoral
scholars for research at institutions in Central and Eastern Europe,
Eurasia, and Mongolia. American scholars in policy research and
development, social sciences and the humanities, and
cross-disciplinary studies are strongly urged to apply. Very limited
funding is available for predoctoral humanities scholars. Deadline:
November 1, 1998.

Short-Term Travel Grants

Grants for scholarly projects focusing on Central and Eastern Europe,
Eurasia, and limited opportunities for Mongolia. Support is available
for brief visits (about two weeks) for individuals who do not require
administrative assistance from IREX. American scholars in policy
research and development, and cross-disciplinary studies are strongly
urged to apply. Deadlines: February 1, 1999; and June 1, 1999.

Special Projects in Library and Information Science

Grants to support librarians, archivists, and information specialists
pursuing projects relating to Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
The objective of these grants is to increase access and improve
working conditions for American scholars using libraries, archives,
and other resources in Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
Deadline: March 31, 1999.

Southeastern Europe Area Studies Development Program

One-month grants for scholars wishing to improve their knowledge of
the Southeastern European region, with particular emphasis on language
training. Held in Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Romania during
July, seminar topics vary each year to complement the needs and
interests of each group of scholars. Deadline: November 1, 1998.

Applications are accepted in policy research and development,
cross-disciplinary studies, the humanities, and social sciences only.

Eligibility requirements vary by program. Please contact IREX for
applications and further information on these and other programs. You
