Canada Loses C$400 Mln a Year to Illegal Immigrants, Paper Says
Ottawa, Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Illegal immigrants to Canada, as many as
16,000 a year, cost Canada C$400 million (US$258 million) a year to process
and care for, the Vancouver Sun reported. Prospective immigrants pay up to
C$50,000 to smugglers, usually linked to organized crime groups, and often
become involved in prostitution, drug trafficking or theft once they make
it to Canada to pay their smuggling debts. Almost 4,800 people arrived in
Canada by plane last year without proper documents, the newspaper reported.
Canada's crime rate fell 5.4 percent to 8,355 incidents for each 100,000
people in 1997, down from 8,828 incidents for each 100,000 in 1996.
