COMMENT ON THE DHAKA DECLARATION (Trafficking in Women)

The participants at the Regional Asian Conference recommned...
"that governments reject any policy... that legistimises... prostitution...
in any way, including as a profession, ocuppation..."
In Argentina and in general in all latinamerican countries, the feminist
movement theorically agree with this recommendation but we have to consider
the concrete reality of many poor adult women that consider themselves as
sex workers. They fight to be recognized as workers by the goverments and
the trade unions.
I have participated in the last meeting of the United Nations Human Rights
Commission in june at Geneva and there was a debate between Swedish and
Peruvian delegations aroundthis point of view It is not easy to take an
ideological position in countries where there is not a social answer for
prostitutes.
