SVETITSKHOVELI CATHEDRAL
Svetitskhoveli
cathedral was built in 1010-1029. It is situated in the old capital of
Georgia Mtskheta. It is surrounded by a crenellated stone wall. The robe
of Christ is said to burried in asmall chape within the cathedral. An angular
column, which gave the cathedral its name - stands under a large archway.
The frescoes on the columns belong to the 17th century. Several members
of Bagratid dynasty of Georgian kings are burried in the cathedral. Svetitskhoveli
has suffered many times, particularly during one of Tamerlane's invasions.
