FREEDOM HOUSE

The NGO regional networking project

The purpose of this three-year, $3 million project, part of the United States Agency for International
Development's Democracy Network, is to strengthen Central and Eastern Europe's community of public policy-oriented non-governmental organizations. The primary objective of the Freedom House project is to facilitate cross-border cooperation among indigenous NGOs which are active in developing public policy in the areas of democratization, economic development, environment, and social safety nets.

    Project Activities

The US Internship Program provides internships in the US for approximately 15 senior NGO managers from CEE each year. Those selected to participate in this program work in the offices of American counterpart organizations. The US internship programs normally convene three times each year in January, May, and September for a duration of six weeks, although special programs may be arranged at other points in the year as well. The Regional Internship and Exchange Program provides NGO managers and project staff from CEE an opportunity to work in the offices of counterpart organizations within the region. The purpose of the regional internships and exchanges is to encourage stronger links between CEEs indigenous NGOs and to enhance the prospects for cross-border cooperation and project development. The duration of a regional internship or exchange program is generally 2-4 weeks.
The Central and Eastern European internship program

Since 1984, the National Forum Foundation served as a non-profit educational organization dedicated to advancing political and economic freedom around the world. This mandate manifested itself in a variety of programs, now sponsored by Freedom House, designed to support the democratization process taking place in Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
In 1990, the NFF established the Central and Eastern Europe Internship Program. This professional training program provides new leaders from the region's young democracies with the opportunity to work in the United States for three months, side-by-side with their American counterparts in government, media, non-governmental and business institutions. Visiting Fellows are selected by a competitive process including interviews with Freedom House staff in the home country of the applicant. All Fellows must speak English fluently. The Visiting Fellows who participate in these internships are in key positions to hasten the democratic transitions underway in their home countries.

Freedom House seeks applications from qualified candidates in several professions, including:
Journalism and Media Management
Civil Society Development
Economic Development and Reform
If you are interested in participating, submit a completed application to Freedom House, 511 C

Welcome to Cultural Connection!

    What is Cultural Connection?
Our program is designed to foster cultural exchange between Americans and foreign students visiting the Boston, Massachusetts area. By pairing with a foreign student with similar interests as yourself you open the door to a wonderful world of sharing, discovery, enlightenment and plain fun! And in the process you could be making a friend for life and be well on the way to being a part of our global community. We ask you, as a partner, to arrange at least two visits or activities with your student each month for the duration of their stay (average of 2-4 months). This can be anything from getting together for a meal to a planned activity that you both enjoy. The important thing is to share a bit of your life with them and allow them to share themselves with you.
    COSTS:
The students are prepared to pay for themselves for activities outside your home.
    TRANSPORTATION:
Most students do not have a car, but do have access to the T and other public transportation. Your
willingness to transport them or meet them at a suitable place is very much appreciated.
    COMMUNICATION:
Most students have at least 5 years of English language study in their home countries and are currently studying English here, so basic communication is not a problem. However, being in new situations and having new experiences, as they will with you, will expose them to new vocabulary. Patience and a sense of humor will overcome any rough spots. I am available to help in any way. For further information or to have any questions answered please do not hesitate to call me at 617-969-5327 or fax me at 617-482-4754.
