Southern Wave is a youth organization formed in 1993 as a result of a festival of independent artists held in Krasnodar, entitled Southern Wave '93. Since its inception, the group has held more than 100 events for youth throughout the Kuban region. 1997 programs included:
- Choose and Vote!–students participated in a mock parliament to learn about democratic values and processes. A mobile voting station also traveled to various student and youth clubs for these groups to hold elections and gain an understanding of the electoral process.
- Say No to Drugs!–using pop culture as a medium to reach youth, Southern Wave held a series of anti-drug events that featured local rock bands, DJs, and actors from a popular television show.
The events also included a public debate on tobacco advertising and an art exhibition, entitled Art Against AIDS.
