The Kurgan Society researches Russia's history during World War II and works with state and public organizations to find, preserve and restore the monuments of the war. It organizes search parties to find and properly bury the remains of Soviet soldiers killed in the Great Patriotic War, as WWII is commonly known in Russia. Kurgan has reburied the remains of 480 soldiers and officers, and published five articles on the history of the war. The society's members also educate young people about the war.
