for those interested in Russia or news media. This list is by no means
exhaustive. You will generally find that once you start down a path, the
path branches off to many interesting "side trips."

Russia plus media:
Commersant: One of Russia's first Western-style business newspapers
is coming soon to the Net.
- East View Publications:
Provides searchable archives of the newspapers
Gazeta, and it has information about other publications as well.
- GlasNews: Quarterly newsletter for
Russian and American journalists, published by the Art Pattison
Communications Exchange Program.
- Internews: Based in
Arcata, Calif., Internews is a nonprofit organization aimed at assisting
independent broadcast media in the former Soviet Union.
- Jamestown Foundation:
This foundation publishes digests of media reports and analyses
of developments in Russia. The Web site is currently under construction.
- Kolo Information Server: OK,
OK, so it's Ukrainian rather than Russian. But this Web site does feature
Kharkov, a Ukrainian newspaper displayed in Cyrillic.
- Nezavisimaya Gazeta:
This really is the foremost "Independent Newspaper" in Russia ... it pulls
no punches in criticizing the government. The newspaper is displayed
in Cyrillic, so set up your browser for KOI-8 fonts.
- Novosti Nauki:
News about technological developments in Russia, made available via
a Japanese news service called Tokyo KaleidoScoop.
- Open Media Research Institute:
Successor to the RFE/RL Research Institute, OMRI prepares a daily digest of
news gleaned from media reports in the former Soviet Union and Eastern
- Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty:
Although some of RFE/RL's services have been taken over by OMRI, the
Washington-based broadcast service still maintains its own Web site
with news and background about Russian developments.
- Russia-On-Line / Izvestia: An
easy-to-use online service created by Sovam
Teleport, drawing together lots of Russian resources - including
one of Russia's most respected newspapers.
Far East Update: Web version of monthly report on the economy and
politics of the Russian Far East, published in Seattle.
Literature on the Net: A treasure trove of links to publications in Russian,
including newspapers as well as poetry and prose.
Media: Another great listing of Russian media resources, maintained by
Newspaper Collection: Russian newspapers available in
Adobe's Acrobat PDF format, including
Klub, presented by the Association for International Education.
- Russica-Izvestia Information:
All sorts of media databases, including Izvestia and the Russian Information
Agency as well as Russian Press Digest. You can search by date and
publication, and download the selected articles.
- St. Petersburg
Press: Web newspaper published weekly by the English-language newspaper
in St. Petersburg, Russia, complete with classifieds.
- Ukraine FAQ Plus:
Information about Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora.
- Vesti: A Russian-language newspaper published in Canada.
- Vladivostok News: Stories
from Vladivostok's English-language newspaper, provided by TribWeb, online
service of The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington.
- Voice of Russia:
English-language radio service from Russia, transmitted via
- Vostok Rossii: East of Russia:
Feature articles and pictures from Vladivostok's East Coast Group.

for Civil Society International: Information related to building civil
societies in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
- Friends &
Partners: All sorts of information from and about Russia.
- Gateway Travel:
Australian travel agency provides information about
Russia and Eastern Europe. Very commercially oriented, but some useful
material on hotels and sightseeing.
- GlasNet: GlasNet provides network
services primarily for individuals and nongovernmental organizations
- Relcom: Considered the former Soviet
Union's largest network access provider. Relcom's
"Window to Russia" service is more
specifically geared to international users.
Fonts: Wide selection of freely distributable Cyrillic fonts for Macs
and Windows machines.
- Russian Marketplace: A directory of business opportunities in Russia, goods and services from Russia, as well as other ventures related to Russia and Russians.
- Russia On-Line / Russian Trade
Connection: Concentrates on business-related information relevant to
Russian Page: Brings together Russian-related resources, including visa
information from the Russian
Consulate in Seattle.
- Sovam Teleport: Lots of resources
from a Western-style network access provider.
- A Reporter's Internet Survival

America's premier newspaper-industry publication goes online.
Forum: A foundation devoted to fostering press freedom in America and
- Global Network Navigator: Lots of
interesting links, travel guides and other feature articles. One of the
first Web publications.
- HotWired: Magazine with an attitude
covers the online world, and lets you talk back.
- Internet Town Hall: Links to
National Press Club speeches, the EDGAR database of financial information,
and much, much more.
- Journalism: The World
Wide Web Virtual Library: Exhaustive collection of resources for
- Microsoft Network: New kid on the
block provides links to favorite sites, rich with graphics.
- NewsLink: Lots of links to
online publications, organized by category.
- New York Times:
Excellent Web news service, incorporating articles from America's
newspaper of record as well as extra features for Netheads.
- New York Times (Acrobat/Fax):
Interesting use of Adobe Acrobat to provide the New York Times' eight-page
fax version over the Internet.
Page: The Web is used to archive postings to the premier mailing list
for people involved in the online news industry.
- Poynter Institute for
Media Studies: Guides to (and reports about) computer-assisted
journalism, as well as lists to "hot sites" related to the news of the day.
- RealAudio: RealAudio technology
lets you listen to National Public Radio, ABC News and other audio
information (even music) over the Internet.
- Thomas: Legislative Information on the
Internet: The Library of Congress' Web site has the full text of all
federal legislation as well as links to other government resources.
- Video Online: Italy-based Internet
service goes after a global market, including Russia.
- Wall Street Journal Money & Investing
Update: Updated financial news and information from the Journal - be
sure to use Netscape.
- White House: White House
provides a gateway to all sorts of information from the U.S. government.
The Internet used to be thought of as the world's biggest library with all
the books scattered helter-skelter on the floor. But Web searching programs
allow you to find resources by typing in a keyword. In response, the
programs sift through all the files in their memory and sends back a list
of resources that match the keyword (or keywords). My favorite one is
Lycos; other people swear by Yahoo or one of the others listed below. Yahoo
includes a headline news service from Reuters.
Listservs help subscribers exchange information via e-mail, something like
a bulletin board. When you send the specified message to the listserv
address (using your first name and last name in the message), you become a
subscriber and receive further instructions on how to use your listserv.
Every message you send to the "list" address (for example,
firstname.lastname@example.org) is broadcast to every subscriber.
