The program, Tested Food for Upper Silesea, was introduced in Gliwice, Silesia, Poland by the Polish Ecological Club (PEC). The program has a preventative character serving the residents of environmentally degraded industrial areas. The food testing is concentrated for the present on vegetables and will be expanded to grains and grain products. Vegetables are now exported from the cleanest areas in the region where they are cultivated by ecological methods. PEC experts then test contamination levels before the vegetables are delivered to consumers.
The program is implemented in three ways:
(1) by setting up retail stores under the patronage and supervision of PEC; (2) by setting up a distribution system of high quality foods for day care centers and hospitals; (3) by introducing educational activities to large groups of the population (students, parents, local government officials, medical personnel)
Funding for the program is constantly being sought from local government as well as foundations.
