Wireless Technology Is Making New Internet Communication Infrastructure

Why wireless? In the short run, wireless computing technology can enhance the following applications: difficult to wire areas; dynamic work environment (nomadic employees such as salespeople, service technicians, delivery people, and traveling executives). In the long run, it may change the way we work with computers: information access; electronic mail and messaging with voice, video and data; resource sharing; collaborative computing; remote videoconference.

At this time wireless technology is so important for Russia, since we can find in Russia the following current situation: absence of communication infrastructure oriented for personal user, absence of sufficient quantity of wire communication links, necessity of direct access to international communication infrastructure, fast increase number of new small and medium companies located in the building unavailable for public and industrial links, creating of durable wire infrastructure in nowadays practically unsolvable problem because of big territory and heavy natural conditions.

So Russia has a big opportunity to be the place, where the new communication infrastructure will be build.

What we have today and what we will have tomorrow in the field of communication and computing industry? Today: ( Digital Computing + Digital Vision + Digital Communication) + ( Integrated Appliances of Data + Voice + Video). Tomorrow: Personal Information Industry!

But why wireless technology so important? One example. Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) have captured the computing world's imagination, but how about connection them to "real computers"? In other words, PDAs has difficultyaccessing corporate databases and Internet.

But when we are talking about wireless technologies, we must keep in mind that wireless is not a replacement to wired network ... but an extension to wire network. By this way, when we are talking about wireless computing, which will give a possibility to build a new communication infrastructure, we must develop the following key wireless technologies: wireless media, spread spectrum techniques, interconnection with backbone networks, authentication and security, data-video-voice compression, multimedia, adaptive database.

It will be a mistake, if we will not say some words about the most powerful technologies, intended for gathering information worldwide over the Internet are: E-mail, Mosaic, and videoconferencing. Through E-mail one can reach any recipient having an E-mail address -- on the order of 20 million people in over 130 countries and growing at about 8 percent a month -- delivered within several minutes by sending him or her a text message, which can be returned. Full Internet connections allowing direct access to other computers and the information they contain (a growing proportion of the world's knowledge base) total about 3 million in 75 countries, also growing at about 8 percent a month. Mosaic is intended for allowing any recipient having a publicly available free software, called Mosaic Client, to connect with any computer on the Internet having installed software, called Mosaic Server. These connections provide client access to Hypertext documents, rendered by the Server. Hypertext documents can also include multimedia data (text, graphics, sounds, etc.) in a single Hypertext page. Also Mosaic Hypertext can have information cross-references, with the possibility linking to other Mosaic Servers worldwide in Internet. This old and new at one time technology together with wireless possibilities are making new communication infrastructure in the worldwide.

A some words about INTERNET commerce opportunities. This movement can give a some additional featuresfor INTERNET users:

By this way, consumers will benefit from 24 hours access to any business service; access to a new and greater selection of products and possible services; reducing of the midlemans between vendors and customers; possibility of the automated order processing. It can open a new opportunityfor financial institutions, shopping and retail, anyone companies distributing or collecting information. But from other hand we can see a lot of discussions that INTERNET was buit to share information, but not for protection of the information and business over the INTERNET can be particularly dangerous, due to its lack of structure. But we can be lucky, since some new products will be available soon, which will provide solutions and services to information providers, service providers, and ultimately consumers who want to do commerce over public networks. I think that we will have a possibility to discuss these products during next INTERNET workshop and the following features of these products:

ELVIS+ is a private Russian Joint stock company, created by former members of ELAS Scientific and Industrial company - leader of the Soviet space electronic industry. ELVIS+ has 2-years experience in providing Internet services in RUSSIA -- including faxservice, E-mail, World Wide Web (WWW), Wide Area Information Server (WAIS). Since 1992 ELVIS+ has been developing the key technologies for wireless computer networks, including radios, radio modems, and radio antennas . The original radio frequency targeted is 2.4 to 2.483,5 GHz, which can be used without license in the United States and Western Europe if the power is kept below one watt. ELVIS+ radioadapters are based on forward Spread Spectrum radio-technology -- Direct Sequences Spread Spectrum (DSSS). DSSS radios with Binary Phase Shift Keying BPSK modulation works very well in the presence of interference.

Other advantages of the proposed technology include international license-free 2400-2483,5 MHz band-controlled power (flexibility)- range up to 10 km with omnidirectional antennas. The basic radio-technologies (antennas & transceivers) are being patented in the USA.

Elvis+ has its own approaches in Internet service provision, related to developing a global network of commercial databases, remote FAX service, to place at TDe disposal to banks TDe supporting of remote client bills checking, supporting a hotline for software products customers and so on. ELVIS+ plans to show some business features of Internet, key wireless computing technologies and Elvis+'s own information model at INTERNET WorkShop.
