Food exhibit goes to feed hungry mouths

Food-Expo 1996 has borne good fruit for some of St Petersburg's underprivileged children.

Thanks to Karl Brauer, Russian representative of the German food company Hochwald, all of the food left over from his company's stall has been donated to the charity Peter's Children.

Dr Yevgeny Ivanov of the "Cardiac Rehabilitation Center" picked up the food at the end of the four-day conference on Saturday.

Jane Mazumdar of Peter's Children said, "Yevgeny has a constant problem with not having enough money to buy food and so he was over the moon to receive bottled sausages and a variety of milk from Mr Brauer."

The center accommodates up to 100 children who stay about a month to recuperate from heart surgery.

The children, aged between six and 15 years, come from all over Russia. Like most institutions of its kind, the center is in poor repair and runs on a very tight budget.

Peter's Children hopes to be able to start refurbishing the center's kitchen facilities soon.

The charity, which was formed in March 1993, helps a variety of projects throughout the city, from large children's homes to individual Russian families. (SPP)
